A Message from the Conference Chair, Dr. Monica Martinez-CanalesWarm greetings to you all!Welcome to the information center for Tapia 2007! In this fourth Tapia conference, we are bringing together an exciting technical program inclusive of our famed plenaries, panels, workshops, and BoFs. We also invite technical papers in the specific areas of, but not limited to:
In concert with Dr. Richard Tapia’s legacy of recruitment, retention and graduation of under-served student populations in higher education, a major goal of the conference is to achieve significant and diverse student participation. To that end, we offer specific student venues: a Doctoral Consortium (a running favorite), and, not one, but two student competitions: Posters and Robotics. The Robotics Competition will actually commence over the spring and summer, but the actual robot-to-robot match-ups will be inaugurated at Tapia 2007. We will also be coordinating with ACM's Student Research Competition of student posters. Winners of the student poster competition will be eligible to compete in the SRC Grand Finals! Find out more in our "Participating" Link. In addition to all the above-mentioned firsts in our fourth conference, we will mark another first with the co-location of The Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing and the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference (Oct 17-20). We are very excited about working with our sister conference. Stay tuned for more information on our shared day activities (Oct 17). Finally, a word or two about our conference theme. The Tapia 2007 conference theme is Passion in Computing – Diversity in Innovation. These words - Passion. Computing. Diversity. Innovation - all mean different things to each and every one of us. But one thing is certain. We would not be computing if we were not passionate about it. We would not be passionate if we did not dedicate ourselves to continued learning to propel ourselves to new heights that resulted in discovery, creativity, and innovation. But it is not enough to be all these things. We must be able to compete in a global economy. Are we (you) ready to compete globally? If not, what would it take? The Tapia 2007 conference theme is part response to the American Competitiveness Initiative (ACI) "to encourage American innovation and strengthen our Nation's ability to Compete in the Global Economy." The rest of the response to the ACI is up to you. What are the stakes? Without your active input, the rest of the ACI response will be written without you. To that end, I would especially welcome any panel/workshop/BoF submissions that addressed the ACI in part or whole. Until next time, Monica Martinez-Canales, General Chair |
